quantumreality: (Continuum-Kiera)

And now we're onto the next episode: "Fast Times". Incidentally, the pilot is also named "A Stitch in Time". I spot a certain theme in the titles... ;-)

And we have our first set of Opening Credits!:

2077. My time, my city, my family. When terrorists killed thousands of innocents, they were condemned to die. They had other plans.

A time travel device sent us all back 65 years. I want to get home, but I can't be sure what I will return to if history is changed. Their plan: to corrupt and control the present in order to win the future. What they didn't plan on was me.

What you can see here is that while the show wants us to sympathize with the focus-character protagonist, Officer Kiera Cameron, militating against it is based on what we see, it seems like there are injustices in Kiera's world she is not prepared to confront because her job depends/ed on preserving the 2077 status quo. That, and Liber8's tactics are plain not acceptable.

We begin after the credits with a scene from 2077!

It turns out that we're seeing Kiera's first day on the job! :) Those yellow boxes around people's faces in this scene definitely remind me of Person of Interest. :P

In the last part of this scene (not shown), Kiera gets into an elevator in 2077. We see her look up at the floor level indicator, then the camera pans back down and we see her in 2012. Alec's upgrading his firmware to handle the bandwidth of Kiera's CMR communications, and she has to gently chide him over boundaries. To his credit, Alec isn't a creeper and always backs off when he's told he's overstepping in his ability to "ride along" with Kiera, as it were.

(Aside: I wish I could figure out what that molecule is on Alec's shirt. I don't think we ever see the entire thing but if I can find out I'll definitely let y'all know. :) )

Cut to the Liber8 folks! Arming and prepping for a trip to the power station!

But why the power station?

It seems Lucas, holding the little ball which resembles the time travel device used in the pilot, may have a plan. Contrary to his claim of a "one-way trip" in the pilot, it seems he thinks he knows how to make the return trip! :O

Cut to the VPD cop shop. Kiera meets Carlos, and they find out Dillon wants to set up a new task force devoted to dealing with the new gang. There's several funerals for dead officers, and Kiera, embarrassed, covers by saying she packed really quickly.

Hello again, IT lady! (Her name is Betty Robertson, by the way)

She has a little possessiveness over Carlos it seems :P Kiera's all just "Hey, I'm not getting in the middle of this!"

Unfortunately it brings up the issue of breakups, and Kiera sadly says, "I left him." :(

Switch to Liber8 again. Seems that Kellog is not as anxious as the others to get back to 2077!

Lucas, however, is confident that with an early 21st century power source and the time travel ball, he can get everybody back. So Travis, the big guy, says they keep moving on as planned.

Even so, Kellog presses his case that if Liber8 does their work right, they can amass a considerable amount of wealth and use it to push their message without resorting to the use of guns and violence.

The show reminds us that Liber8 aren't nice people when we see that they stuffed the dead owner of the house into the deep freeze to hide the body. :O

Kiera's number is up! She gets accosted by Inspector Dillon, who introduces Dan Barlow, Portland PD, who says she sure isn't the real Linda Williams. Kiera's placed under arrest! :( She gets put into interrogation, where Carlos begins asking her about her back story. Alec, listening in, realizes her cover won't hold, and gets her to find out what will happen, so he can infiltrate the right databases and make a better cover identity.

It's kind of cool how he also becomes a kind of "2012 encyclopedia" for Kiera. :P

Kiera helps with a brilliant gambit! With her CMR enhancements, she puts her thumb on the mirrored glass in front of her and scans her thumbprint! :D

More amazing suitness! Kiera uses it to tap out a text message to Alec :D

Incidentally, Brian Markinson seems to end up playing a lot of cop and military like characters. He was Agent Duram in Caprica, a Battlestar commander in Blood & Chrome, and now he's Inspector Dillon. And especially unlike in Caprica, here he plays a pretty reasonable, mostly by-the-book, police precinct boss. Dillon doesn't demand impossible things, but he's not going to let someone off the hook without a good reason.

We switch to the Liber8 folks infiltrating "BC Power".

Incidentally, a fair number of the bigger company names are fictional, probably to avoid legal liability issues. The bank Kiera "hacks" is a nonexistent Lower Mainland Bank, for example. And the actual BC electric utility is called BC Hydro.

The show also takes a few minor liberties with Vancouver geography but in the main they get it pretty close to right. :)

So, in that parking garage, the unfortunate guy standing outside the van gets a flurry of karate-chops into oblivion. Then another guy comes out, tries to tase Travis, and is surprised when it has no effect!

This is the first indication that the era of 2077 is capable of not just enhancing capabilities electronically, but probably at the biological or cellular level instead. Travis could be a genetically engineered supersoldier. :O

They do their thing in the substation, tapping off the power they need (and in the process causing a power outage across several city blocks) for the time-travel module.

This coincides with a trip Kiera is taking down in the elevator with Carlos, and while the elevator is stuck, Alec is still in contact with her, and manages to relay to Kiera the security footage from the substation!

Kiera taps the shock function of her superspecial suit, and BZAP! Carlos goes down. :( She unlocks herself, apologizes to Carlos, and then vamooses to chase after the gang!

We get an amusing introduction to the operation of a ground-based vehicle for someone who's never worked an early-21st century car before. :D

Obligatory YouTube clip.

Then Alec goes to get lunch, and we get a little backstory. Alec apparently takes after his father, possibly even being in the same line of research!

While Liber8 is off to see about returning to 2077, Kellog has other plans. He's in a bank, and it's obvious he's decided to see about multiplying his riches in the 2010s. :P

"How much did you plan to start with?" *bag o' money* "All of it!"

What I like is that the show has Kellog using Canadian money. That shows he's smart and era-savvy, because bringing in US money in that amount would probably have triggered an audit trace to see if he declared that much money in a funds transfer, and if not, what's he doing with it?

I like that. :)

Back to Carlos! There's a funny Noodle Incident reference in this scene, apparently, when Carlos sees Inspector Dillon.

"Oh, don't act like you've never been handcuffed to an elevator before!" *Dillon is unimpressed*

X-D

Alec the wonderboy helps Kiera out when she investigates the attack at the substation. He can hack anything, it seems! :P He taps into the police band to find out what the cops on the scene are saying about her 'cause they seemed to get interested. Turns out there's an APB on her. Oops!

She goes invisible and escapes back to her hotel. :D That suit is srsly frakking awesome :P

I'll stop here, since the next "arc" of the episode begins here and I'll want to do that as Part 2.
